Note, a registration fee of $60 is required per registration. ($30  if registering before May 15, 2010) However, teachers who have registered for teacher training and parents who are registering students with one fee per family do not have to pay an extra registration fee.
To help Teacher Trainee Registrants reach the required amount of observation hours for their Suzuki training course, some of the hours from the enrichment courses listed below may be used towards observation.  Trainees must be enrolled for the course and attend all sessions in order to use a portion of the hours towards their observation quota.  Teachers enrolled in the Gordon class may use up to three (3) course hours towards their observation requirements.  Teachers enrolled in any other course listed below may use up to two (2) hours towards their observation time needed.

INTRODUCING THE MUSIC MOVES FOR PIANO GORDON APPROACH (Available to all instrumental teachers). Edwin Gordon has been listed in the Music Educators Journal as one (along with Suzuki, Dalcroze, Orff and kodaly) of the top five most influential musical educators of the last century. This course will be presented by Dr. Garek Pederson (MI).   Dr. Pederson co-developed the Gordon Piano Method along with Dr. Gordon and Marilyn Lowe. Learn the fundamentals that will enable you to incorporate Dr. Gordon's audiation skills in lessons. Rhythm and tonal patterns are fundamental for listening, creating, and performing music with understanding and musicianship. During this interactive session, registrants will work together to experience sequenced rhythm and tonal patterns that underline all music. Get on board with the latest research on rhythm and pitch development from an aural viewpoint! 10 HOURS TOTAL, 2 HOURS DAILY, M - F, 2:15 - 4:15,  Cost $150.

 

TEACHING MUSIC HISTORY,MUSIC APPRECIATION, STYLE, AND COMPOSER STUDY THROUGH MULTI MEDIA.  This class is a companion course to the student music history film/recordings course.  Registrants will be able to attend the student course also at no extra charge. This teacher course will focus on deeper historical, music theory, and stylistic apsects and composer biographies . It will show certain parts of the films that are historically important but can't be shown in the student classes because of the more adult related aspects.  A comprehensive bibliography of all the shown films (from cinema, television productions and special DVDs) and recordings played as well as additional listings.  Also included will be a written historical perspective for teachers to present to students when showing the films in their home studios. Plan on a highly educational , and a fun/invigorating experience.  5 HOURS TOTAL, 1 HOUR DAILY, M - F, 11 - 12 noon, Cost - $80.

OVERVIEW OF REVISED SUZUKI PIANO SCHOOL - THE INTERNATIONAL EDITION.  Dr Harrel, a member of the SAA piano committee, will present an overview of the recently published new editions of the Suzuki MethodPiano School.  Special emphasis will be on the newly added repertoire.  New pieces expand the mainly baroque and classical repertoire of the original editions by adding a wider selection of pieces from those eras as well as selections from the romantic and modern periods.  Discussions will include revised fingerings, phrasings, and other editorial aspects.  Participants will have the opportunity to offer ideas to the piano committee regarding further revisions.  Attendees will also have the opportunity to play some of the repertoire for class discusson.  5 HOURS TOTAL,1 HOUR DAILY, M - F, 4:15 - 5:15,  COST $80

 

TEACHING STRING FIDDLING AND IMPROV.  Registrants will benefit from Ms Tyree-Mertz's years of experience as a Suzuki violin and improvisation/fiddle teacher and her vast performing experiences in various bands and at Suzuki Institutes.  This course is open to all string instruments (bass, viola, cello, and guitar) and will concentrate on learning and performing together various styles such as celtic, bluegrass, cajun, Appalachian, gospel, popular, and Americana.  Ms. Tyree-Mertz has developed a series of fiddle books and improv methods using the well known Suzuki literature and sequential system of learning skills.  Participants are invited to observe and participate in the student classes and final concert on Friday evening at no extra charge.  Pedagogical and listening sources will be discussed.  5 HOURS TOTAL, 1 HOUR DAILY,  M - F, 4:15 - 5:15, $80.

OVERVIEW OF MODERN MUSIC EDUCATION APPROACHES  - A summary and comparison of various innovative modern approaches such as Dalcroze, Orff, Gordon, Kodaly, Suzuki, Body Mappig, Gardner, Alexander Technique and various pedagogical, supplemental repertoire such as Barbara Barber's series and Carole Bigler, Valery Watts "Everybody's Perfect Masterpieces", and other new music methods.  Emphasis will be on the similarities and differences among the various ideologies presented.  Taught by various IMF faculty, 5 HOURS TOTAL, 1 1/4 hours daily, M - TH, 6 - 7:15 PM, $80.

DIRECTION NEEDED FOR SUZUKI PIANO -  This course will offer a discussion of the state of Suzuki Piano in America.  Has it evolved to it's full potential?  Has Suzuki piano instruction been as successful as other Suzuki instrumental instruction? Is it being successful in areas such as review, listening, performance levels, teacher standards, etc that are the core philosophical and methodological foundations of the Suzuki Method?  What great aspects of the original Japanese method are being overlooked, and what ways does American Suzuki Piano need "westernization" for greater success and reputation?   Led by Dr. Ray Landers, Rita Hauck, and Dr. Doris Harrel. M- F, 7 - 7:45 AM, $80.

TEACHING READING AND THEORY - This course will emphasize various pre-reading techniques usable for all instrumental study as well as proper ways to pursue reading and theory with students who have begun music study through Suzuki's "Mother Tongue" approach or immersion listening and have reached a level of playing where note reading can be introduced.  Included will be Dr. Landers' "Eight Step Conceptual Approach", Michiko Yurko's Music Mind Games, Edwin Gordon's Methodology, and other approaches found in modern music methods.  Open to teacher trainees, parents, and educators with emphasis on conceptual ideas appropriate for all instruments. TEACHING POPULAR AND JAZZ STRING IMPROVISATION - An outstanding jazz and pop performer and well-known Suzuki violin clinician and orchestra performer will share his approaches in helping string students understand and perform various improvisational techniques.  Class members are asked to bring their instruments (violin, viola, cello, bass) to the sessions for hands on participation.  They are also invited to take part in the student improv classes and perform in a concert on Friday. Pedagogical materials will be available.
