All enrichment classes will be scheduled between 2:15-6:05 PM, M-F.
They will be arranged according to ages and levels.
Each class will be presented in a performance on Friday or Saturday Final Concerts

ART - Students will learn classic principles of art through exciting and varied mediums and subject matter. some art students will assist the teacher in desiging a set for the THE LION KING production on Friday.  Parents of children under the age of 6 are required to remain with their child for this class (other parents may also remain). For siblings who are not full-time registrants, fee is $60.00 on a space available basis only. EXTRA FEE: $10.00 includes materials (ages 3 and up) 

CHAMBER MUSIC - Available to students of all instruments at the intermediate level and above. Reading must be at the Suzuki or traditional book 3 level for violins, book 2 level for piano, viola, cello, harp, book 1 level for guitar and flute. Possible chamber groups could include string quartets, piano trios and quartets, piano duo, harp and flute ensemble, brass or woodwind ensembles. Students currently working in an ensemble may request to be placed together during the Festival. Otherwise, students will be assigned an ensemble on a first-come, first served basis. Participants will be sent music in advance, or will be expected to purchase the appropriate literature when notified. Music must be thoroughly learned (memory not expected) and rehearsal ready at the start of the Festival. EXTRA FEE: $100.00, due to small class size.  

DANCE/FOLK  - A fun approach to learning traditional folk dances (from various nationalities and periods) and stylized baroque such as the minuet, gigue, and gavotte and other era dances such as the waltz, ecossaise, and tarantella. (recommended age mature 5 to 12, parents are encouraged to participate at no extra charge).

EARLY CHILDHOOD MUSIC - Developmentally appropriate activities which are based on Dalcroze, Kodaly, Suzuki, Orff-Schulwerk and more recent approaches will be used to provide musical experiences for the children. Activities will include listening, moving, singing and playing instruments such as glockenspeil, drums, triangle, and various percussion instruments. (ages 3 to 6) A parent or guardian is required to participate in this class by helping the children.

FENCING - Learn this centuries-old sport from a master. Fencing develops physical fitness, mental concentration, coordination, speed, agility - and it's fun. Classes will cover all aspects of the sport including foot drills, weapon drill, tactics, rules, scoring and judging. Class is hands-on with all equipment provided.  (ages 5 and up) Parent or guardian must assist those ages 5 to 7.  Parents of children over ages 7 who wish to participate must also sign up for the course ($60)  EXTRA FEE: $30.00

FIDDLING AND FOLK SONG PERFORMANCE FOR VIOLINISTS - Section 1  - for late bk. 1 and bk. 2 students, basic introduction to bowing styles, rhythms and melodies using familiar pieces; section 2 - for bk. 3 and up students, introducing chording, elements of trick fiddling, and advanced fiddle techniques including creating "breaks" or fiddle variations to familiar fiddle tunes. Fiddling contest for both sections with winners playing at final concert on Friday. Books and CDs will be available at the registration desk.

GORDON METHOD AUDIATION APPROACHES - for all instruments -Section 1- ages 6 -10; Section 2: ages 11 and  up.   Learning how musical sounds are created. Experience, hear, and feel the fascinating rhythms that make music so exciting.  Soon, students  will be listening to (audiating), creating, and performing music in a new way - from "the inside." Especially helpful in Suzuki and other listening approaches to help students learn better by ear and analysis.

GUITAR INTRO - Two sections of this class will be offered, one for beginning students who don't read music; a second class will be for students who already read and play another instrument. Basic chords and strumming techniques will be taught by a nationally recognized, SAA sanctioned Suzuki Teacher Trainer.  Proper size guitars will be available for rental or you may bring you own. (ages 5 and up).

HANDBELLS - Learn basic handbell techniques and fun pieces by participating in this ensemble. No previous handbell experience necessary. This class is appropriate for students from beginning to more advanced levelsas as it will be taught utilizing Orff method principles that emphasize coordinating the simplest few note melodies for the earlier students with longer, more complex rhythms and melodies for the more advanced students.(ages 5 and up)

HARP - LEVEL 1 - Discover the joy of music-making at the harp! Learn the fundamentals of playing this unique instrument. Using the Suzuki approach, students will learn to play simple folk songs and will be able to perform in an optional recital. Some keyboard and/or note reading experience helpful, but not necessary. (ages 5 and up including adults, adults who wish to participate must pay $60 fee.) EXTRA FEE: $35.00 includes harp rental. 

HARP - LEVEL 2 - In this class, students with some previous harp experience will have the opportunity to learn new repertoire and improve their technique. They will prepare solos, duos and trios in an enjoyable ensemble setting and may perform in an optional recital. Students will be grouped according to age and level. (ages 7 and up including adults) EXTRA FEE: $35.00 includes harp rental

HUMOR IN MUSIC - Acting, singing, and dancing in a "mini-musical." Great introduction to musical theater through activities which develop poise and self-confidence, geared specifically for ages 7-12. An additional rehearsal may be scheduled mid-week if needed. (ages 6 to 12) EXTRA FEE: $20.00  Additional this year: Terry Durbin will contribute to this class by demonstrating his "State of YO". 

IMPROVISATION FOR PIANISTS - Improvising classical, and popular styles such as blues, ragtime, rock and jazz at the keyboard. Each style will be broken down into basic harmonic, melodic and rhythmic concepts. Students are introduced to basic 7th and 9th chords, and jazz scales and modes. (pianists level late book 2 or early sonatinas and above).

IMPROVISATION FOR STRINGS - Learning jazz, blues, new age and other popular styles. Emphasis on melodic and jazz scale patterns, popular/jazz chord structuring, instrumental techniques - bass, cello, viola, violin. (mid-book 2 and up)

KARATE - Beginning; Intermediate-Advanced Sections - Covers the basics of the Martial Arts. Stances, blocks, strikes, and kicks are covered in addition to the practice of meditation and coordinated breathing. Martial Arts is taught as a way of living a healthy, long life, and as a means of helping with mental discipline in music and other studies. (all ages)  Adults may register to participate for a $85.00 fee.

MUSIC APPRECIATION THROUGH FILM - A fun and educational look at the lives of the great composers and their times from various historical eras as presented through viewing entertaining segments from famous commercial films, videos, and television presentations, as well as some recordings. Commentary will be offered to help in appreciating the music. A printed list of available materials will be given to all registrants. (ages 7 and up) Adults with a registered student - free. Other adults and siblings who are not full-time registrants may register for a $50.00 fee.

ORGAN/HARPSICHORD INTRODUCTION - Piano students will have the opportunity to learn basic techniques of organ performance; these include how to use the pedal, the stops, the keyboards, and  technical requirement differences from piano.  Harpsichord study will analyze required touches and stylistic aspects.  Dr. Landers will provide appropriate repertoire for students at the first class.  Organand harpsichord instruction will be hands-on at the magnificent three manual Moller pipe organ and the two manual harpsichord in the church sanctuary.  (All levels from mid-book 1)

PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS: AN INTRODUCTION - an energetic fun approach sampling various instruments such as drums, bongos, congas, etc. through ensemble performance of stimulating music. No experience necessary. (ages 6 and up) 

RECORDER CLASSES - INTRODUCTION OR ENSEMBLE - Students learn simple melodies by ear, rote and reading. The ensemble class is for those with some experience or who enjoyed the introductory class previously. Both classes are open to families but note the minimum ages necessary for reaching the fingerings. Instruments available for purchase, or bring your own. Soprano recorder and/or book appprox. $5 - $10. Alto recorder and /or book $20 - $25. payable to instructor at first class. (Minimum age 6 for soprano recorder, age 8 for alto recorder)

THEORY - MUSIC MIND GAMES FOR BOOK 1 AND 2 STUDENTS - This hands-on class will cover basic music theory concepts such as the music alphabet, intervals, rhythm (reading and values), dictation, the grand staff, music symbols, and tempos. Learning note reading and theory in a fun way featuring the creative materials of Michiko Yurko, taught by and experienced Music Mind Games teacher. (ages 4 to 12)

THEORY - FOR INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED STUDENTS (for book 3 and up students) - A special section of Music Mind Games for those students (all instruments) in book 3 and above who want to further their knowledge of key signatures, major and minor scales, ear training, chords and harmony.
